We’ll start this excursion at the most impressive and historic Arkadi monastery situated on a fertile plateau 23 km to the southeast of Rethymnon. The monastery is a historical symbol linked with the national pride of the Cretan people it played a significant role in the Cretan revolt against Ottoman rule in 1866. We then head to Eleftherna, a village of great natural beauty. The remnants of the ancient city of Eleftherna, one of the most important archaeological sites in Crete, lie near the modern village. Next visiting is the museum with the exhibition of the findings of ancient Eleftherna. Afterwards next destination is the village of Margarites which is famous for its pottery production of Minoan inspiration. Strolling in the narrow streets of Margarites, you will see doors and walls with a beautiful decoration from the times of the Venetian rule. The village gives a real sense of how Cretan villages used to be in past centuries.

Driving east, along the north coast and enjoying the lovely view of the Cretan Sea, we reach the fishing village of Elounda. The “island of tears”’ Spinalonga located after a short cruise through the blue waters from Elounda. This island firstly was a stronghold of the Venetians, then inhabited by the Turks.
Between 1903 and 1957 hundreds of Greece’s lepers were shipped here and then forbidden to leave. It is notable for being one of the last active leper colonies in Europe. You can take a walk around the remains of the colony. A chance for you to see it’s main street with the houses where the lepers attempted to live ordinary lives. It’s a place not to be missed!!
After the short cruise in Spinalonga returning back to Elounda, where you have free time. Then we’ll visit the Agios Nikolaos town, a city with unique features, start with the lake an especially picturesque site which is connected to the sea by a narrow inlet.

The history of Melidoni Cave has been associated with various historical and mythological events throughout the ages. One of the most notable events tied to the cave is the tragic story of the Battle of Melidoni during the Cretan Revolution against Ottoman rule. In 1824, hundreds of civilians were seeking refuge in the cave, and the Ottomans, seeking to quash the rebellion, barricaded the entrance and set fire to it, leading to a devastating loss of life. The cave has also offered important archaeological insights, with the discovery of artifacts and evidence of human activity dating back thousands of years. Next visiting is the Honey Museum in Melidoni village which is a fantastic place to explore the world of beekeeping and honey production.
